In this subject a preventative approach to equine health is taken with emphasis on the importance of industry management in creating a situation with minimal risk of disease for horses. Students enrolled in the Subject via Distance Education are required to attend a 3 day residential school. |

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to objectively assess and monitor horse health;
- be able to identify and mitigate risks to horse health in various Australian settings;
- be able to apply an evidence based approach to horse health care;
- be able to source and critically appraise the equine scientific literature; and
- be able to communicate scientific horse health information to lay people.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Module 1: Horse housing and its impact on horse health, including stress, welfare, behaviour, stereotypies and respiratory disease
- Module 2: Relocating horses and the impacts on horse health. Topics include transport, disease spread, assessing the need to drench, and rotational grazing to control internal parasites
- Module 3: Assessing and monitoring horse health and provision of first aid. Topics include key indicators of horse health, record keeping, horse time budgets, and topical wound care.
- Module 4: Preventative horse health care in Australia. Topics include evidence-based approach to vaccination, and preventing colic, misbehaviour, sore backs, gastric ulceration and respiratory disease.

Residential SchoolThis subject contains a compulsory 3 day residential school.
The Residential School for ASC413 will provide a hands-on approach to the theory taught in this Subject.
