Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- conceptualise, write and defend a dissertation proposal in both oral and written form appropriate for an honours level; - plan and write a literature review for an honours dissertation; - develop an understanding of the function and types of literature reviews; - demonstrate skills as a critical consumer of educational research and syntheise this material; - clearly articulate, in both the proposal and ethics application, the questions that give rise to the study and the issues that arise from its design and conduct. |

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics: - Choosing a research area.
- Specifying researchable focus questions/problems.
- Choosing appropriate research design and methodology, data collection methods and data analysis methods.
- Understanding and applying ethical guidelines.
- The purposes and types of literature reviews.
- Conducting a search of the literature.
- Synthesising the literature.
- Critiquing the literature.
