Abstract
This subject will provide a solid grounding in database design and development. It will show the importance of database design in the development of business applications. There will be an emphasis on conceptual modeling to design a database to meet enterprise needs. The subject will also provide a study of the characteristics and requirements for decision support databases, distributed databases and data warehousing in order to better meet the needs of an enterprise.

Learning OutcomesUpon successful completion of this subject, students should:
- be able to gather, analyse and model business requirements using Enhanced Entity Relationship Diagrams (EERD);
- be able to critically analyse a database design and apply normalisation theory and techniques;
- be able to critically analyse and modify an existing database design to meet new business requirements;
- be able to critically analyse the requirements for a data warehouse and understand and apply the design rules to implement it;
- be able to explain the importance and use of data governance and data quality rules in relation to enterprise databases.

SyllabusThe subject will cover the following topics:
- Explain the role of database management systems and their importance to business organisations.
- The importance and use of data models to design databases to meet business requirements.
- The conceptual design of databases using Enhanced Entity Relationship Diagrams.
- The use of normalisation theory to complete database design.
- The physical design and sizing of database systems.
- The characteristics, use and application of databases for decision support, distributed databases and data warehouses;
- Database Management Systems software and the role of the database administrator.
