Cost of Studying and Course Fees
Before accepting an offer, you should give careful consideration to the following important financial matters. It is your responsibility to ensure that you are in a position to complete your study at the NSW Police Force College. If you undertake the course without adequate financial support, you may need to withdraw at a later date. In such a case, you would be responsible for any costs incurred during your incomplete period of study at the College.
The following information and budget sheet are provided for your personal use (do not return them to CSU). In order to determine your financial capacity to undertake the ADPP, please use the information provided about Income and Expenses to help you complete the Budget Planner.

A. INCOME
- Study Allowances
Full-time students may be entitled to receive Youth Allowance (for those under the age of 25), AUSTUDY (for those 25 years or older), or ABSTUDY for Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander students. These payments are subject to income and assets tests. If you are dependent on your parents, a parental means test will apply for the Youth Allowance. Application forms and guidelines are available from your local Centrelink office or call 131 021. Visit the Centrelink web site. - Scholarships
Scholarships are awarded to 60% of the full-time Session 1 students. - Accommodation Allowance
A $100 a week Accommodation Allowance is provided to everyone who studies the ADPP full-time on campus to help with their living expenses.
B. EXPENSES
You must be able to meet these costs yourself, as financial assistance is not normally available for these expenses (see below: Student Loans – Police Credit Union).
- Tuition Fees
All students enrolled in the Associate Degree must pay a subject tuition fee which is calculated by a formula based on the number of subjects enrolled in each session. Fees can be paid UPFRONT at the commencement of each session (this does not attract a discount) or DEFERRED via the Commonwealth Government loans scheme FEE-HELP with repayments later made through the Australian Tax Office and attracting a loan fee for undergraduate students. You can change payment options at the start of each session.
Rates are $682 (upfront) or $818.40 (deferred) for each equivalent 8 point subject. Rates are as at 2009 and are reviewed each year.
FEE-HELP repayments to the Tax Office will commence immediately your current taxable income reaches $36,185 or higher (2006 threshold), even if you are still studying. Repayments are based on the level of taxable income. Further information on current tuition fees will be provided if and when you are made an offer into the Associate Degree in Policing Practice. - Accommodation
On campus: at the NSW Police Force College: $100 per week, including all meals during Sessions 1 and 2.
Off campus: $70 share and food and bills = $130 (approximate per person) or full board = $125 (approximately). - Textbooks:
Allow approximately $200 each session. Total about $400 pa.
OTHER EXPENSES
When calculating your expenses, include the following items that are commonly overlooked:
- Study related expenses:
(excluding textbooks, mentioned above) photocopying, printing material from computer labs, internet charges, stationery, etc. Allow about $10 per fortnight. Other costs that may not be applicable to all students include swimming and typing lessons, medical reports, first aid course completion, etc. - Travel costs
Do you run a car? In addition to petrol, don't forget registration, insurance and repairs. Will you travel between your home and the College on weekends? How much will this cost in petrol and/or fares? - Maintaining your normal place of residence and family costs
While you are staying at the College (if applicable) must be considered, e.g. mortgage or rent, bills, rates etc. - Entertainment
the cost of participating in organised sports, occasional movies, nights out, drinks, etc. - Other personal items
haircuts, hygiene products, clothing, phone calls, etc.
