Mars Petcare, the makers of beloved pet food brands including PEDIGREE®, WHISKAS®, ADVANCE™ and SCHMACKOS™, believes the world we want tomorrow starts with how we do business today.
In 2017, Mars launched our Sustainable in a Generation plan, a billion-dollar vision to create a world where the planet is healthy, people and pets are thriving, and society is inclusive. As part of this work, we mapped our emissions across our supply chain, which put us on par with the emissions of a small country the size of Panama. Action had to be taken to reduce our environmental impact.
We’ve committed to be net zero at our factories and offices by 2050, but the real impact lies upstream in our value chain, where our ingredients are grown and transported.
As a family-owned business, we have the freedom to think in generations. As our buyers watched grain supply fluctuate with weather events, we felt a responsibility to play our part to invest in farm resilience. The Cool Soil Initiative was conceived by Mars and the Sustainable Food Lab as a pilot program to use data to inform soil health, with a long term goal of reducing our reliance on fertilizers and the associated emissions.
The Cool Soil Initiative is a flagship program for the Mars sustainability teams, and is inspiring projects around the globe.
