Dr Amy Erickson 'Reading Matthew 18 against Yoder'

Dr Amy Erickson recently delivered a thought-provoking lecture as part of the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture's 'Theological Disputes' series. The lecture, titled 'Reading Matthew 18 against Yoder: Toward a biblical theology of Church discipline', critiqued Yoder’s interpretation of church discipline in Matthew 18:15–18 in light of his sexual harassment and assault of women.

During her presentation, Dr Erickson explored the ways in which Yoder interpreted Matthew 18:15-20 to serve his own agenda, placing the emphasis on reconciling dialogue to the exclusion of other layers and features of theological discourse found in the text. She offered an alternative reading of Matthew 18 that emphasises the consequences of individual sin on believers and believing communities, the importance of listening to victims and the disciplinary action to be taken against perpetrators who refuse to listen and the role of prayerful presence in church discipline. Underpinning the model of church disciplined outlined in Matthew is the sobering reality that this ecclesial activity takes place precisely where things are not yet on earth as they are in heaven.

The lecture was attended by academics and church leaders, who actively engaged in a thought-provoking Q&A session following Dr Erickson's presentation. Their contributions further enriched the discussion and provided valuable perspectives on this complex subject.

We extend our gratitude to Dr Erickson for her enlightening lecture and to all who attended for their active participation.
