This New Colombo Plan funded program, aligned with the United Nations sustainable development goals has been designed to provide Charles Sturt Health and Physical Education students with the opportunity to live and work in an authentic pacific island setting.

With support of the experienced Charles Sturt academics you'll spend 4 weeks in Nadi schools.  You'll be challenged to improve your cultural competence (key to being an effective teacher) and teaching skills.

The program is partnered with Fiji National University, Southern Cross University and various sporting affiliations.

Students may be able to meet the requirements in combination of subjects: EEB106 and EPT218 (17 day placement). Students will also complete EEB310.

Students may be eligible to apply for either:

  • Vice-Chancellor Travel Grant of $400. Students must complete all predeparture requirements (see pre-departure tab) before payment can be made.

or

  • New Colombo Plan Mobility Grant of $3000. The Mobility Program is open to Australian (Australian citizen) university undergraduates aged 18 to 28. Participation by undergraduates over 28 is permitted in some circumstances (as outlined in the 2023 Guidelines). Students must complete all predeparture requirements (see pre-departure tab) before payment can be made. Please contact csuglobal@csu.edu.au for an application form.

If you’re studying in a Commonwealth supported place and you undertake this program you may be eligible for OS-HELP. If you are accepted into this program Charles Sturt Global will work with you to check your eligibility for the loan.

Program deposit and due date

$1000 non-refundable deposit due: Within two weeks of notification of successful application
You must have a valid passport or be in the process of applying for one by the first deposit payment date. Your passport must have a minimum of six-month validity from the program's return date.

Pre-departure

All participants will be required to complete mandatory pre-departure requirements. This includes the provision and completion of the following

  • Flight Itinerary*:  You must submit a copy of your E-ticket that clearly lists your dates, flight number/ times from the day you leave Australia until the day you return and confirmation these flights have been paid for.
  • Travel Insurance*:  You will need to ensure you have the appropriate medical and travel insurance from the day you leave Australia until the day you return.  You must submit a copy of your certificate of insurance and your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). At a minimum your insurance must include:
    • Medical Expenses $500,000
    • Repatriation Expenses $15,000
    • Personal Liability $1,000,000
    • 24hr Emergency Assistance Included
    • COVID 19 cover
  • Passport:  You must submit a copy of your passport (the page where your photo is).
  • Pre-departure modules: You will be registered for online pre-departure training
  • Registration with World Travel Protection (WTP): The app provides immediate access to 24-hour emergency medical assistance (in the event that your own insurer is unavailable), security alerts and detailed country reports. You will need to enable World Travel Protection to access your location so you can receive real-time travel and security support if an incident occurs.
  • Student Declaration form: This will be provided with your acceptance email.
  • Emergency contact form: This will be provided with your acceptance email

In addition to the above requirements your program leader will host a number of online predeparture meetings that you will be expected to attend.

I always knew that this experience would develop cultural competencies, but it really transformed how I understood that whole idea. Before going to Fiji, I thought learning about different cultures and giving them respect was all you needed to do, but this taught me you need to go one step further for it to be valuable and meaningful for your students.
