New Zealand Massey University Emergency Management Institute

Hosted by Massey University Emergency Management Institute the 5 day short course will explain how organisations can prepare for, respond to, and recover from a disaster.

The course will begin with an introduction and review of Aotearoa New Zealand and international research and practice. The topics will then be explored through a series of relevant case studies. The final session of each module will provide practical tools and guidance for turning the theory to practice.

Topics include:

  • Emergency management planning
  • Tangata whenua and disasters
  • Developing effective all-hazard warning systems
  • The wellbeing of our people
  • Classroom in the coach

PLEASE NOTE:  Students will not be accompanied by a Charles Sturt University academic on this Program.  Students will travel and attend the Program independently.

Eligibility

This program is offered by the Faculty of Business, Justice and Behavioural Sciences and the Australian Graduate School of Policing and Security.

Bachelor of Emergency Management and Bachelor of Policing.

Students must liaise directly with their Course Director for approval to include an elective subject in their course structure and should do so prior to applying for this program.

Academic Recognition

8 points credit will be provided to students who have available electives/ credit within their parent degree program and who satisfactorily complete a post course assessment, to be assessed by the Emergency Management Discipline Lead,  Astrid Vachette.

Students could be eligible to obtain a $400 Vice Chancellor Travel Grant.  To be eligible students will be required to provided evidence that academic recognition could be available upon successful completion of the Program as well as submitting a number of documents to meet Charles Sturt University's risk management procedures.

Pre-departure

All participants will be required to complete mandatory pre-departure requirements. This includes the provision and completion of the following

  • Flight Itinerary*:  submit a copy of your E-ticket.
  • Travel Insurance*:  ensure you have the appropriate medical and travel insurance from the day you leave Australia until the day you return.  You must submit a copy of your certificate of insurance and your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). At a minimum your insurance must include:
    • Medical Expenses $500,000
    • Repatriation Expenses $15,000
    • Personal Liability $1,000,000
    • 24hr Emergency Assistance Included
    • COVID 19 cover
  • Passport:  submit a copy of the photo page of your passport.
  • Pre-departure modules: You will be registered for online pre-departure training once we approve your application
  • Register with World Travel Assist: The app provides immediate access to 24-hour emergency medical assistance (in the event that your own insurer is unavailable), security alerts and detailed country reports.
  • Student Declaration form: This will be provided with your acceptance email.
