The United Kingdom (inc Northern Ireland) and the Republic of Ireland have a long and diverse history of terrorism and politically motivated violence, dating back as far as the famous Gun Powder Plot, as well as some of the earliest manifestations of modern terrorism, via the Fenian bombing campaigns of the 1800s.

The UK and Ireland have also been impacted by the long history of Irish Republicanism, contemporary Jihadism, and numerous waves of Extreme-Right Wing terrorism. As a function of this long and diverse history, the UK and Ireland have, regrettably, been required to be leaders and innovators  in counter terrorism. This international study tour will provide participants with a unique opportunity to develop their understanding of terrorism and counter terrorism in the UK and Ireland through engagement with government officials and policy makers, counter terrorism practitioners, as well as numerous academics, think tank researchers Oxford, and analysts. The tour will visit London, Belfast, Derry, and Dublin, enabling unique opportunities that will expose participants to a wide variety of terrorism and political violence histories and counter terrorism successes and failures.

Pre-departure reading will be recommended to familiarise participants with the relevant problem sets.

“From an education perspective, the tour was definitely the highlight of my involvement in the Master of Terrorism and Security Studies program. The access we enjoyed to academics and practitioners was better than I had imagined when I signed up for the program. Furthermore, the access to think tanks in Washington and the CTC at Westpoint Military Academy is something I hadn’t even considered as a possibility prior to the tour.  For what it’s worth, I spent 17 years working in the national security community and never had the opportunity to meet with such well-regarded academics and thought leaders in CT, so this program was truly unique."

Program Participant of the 2022 USA Counter Terrorism Program (name withheld).
