United Kingdom Comparative Policing Summer School, John Moores University Liverpool

Through the Centre for Advanced Policing Studies at John Moores University in Liverpool (United Kingdom) students studying a Bachelor of Policing & Public Safety or a Bachelor of Criminal Justice will have an opportunity to:

  • Explore policing in England and Wales through interactions with students, staff, and through various excursions that highlight how research and evidence-based practice drive collaborative partnerships and feed the national decision model (NDM).
  • Visit the Merseyside Police Training Academy after learning about the Policing Education Qualifications Framework (PEQF)
  • Learning about Public Order Policing and Terrorism with LCAPS staff before touring Anfield Football Stadium (home of the Liverpool Football Club).
  • Take a trip to North Wales to see a castle and visit the North Wales Police.
  • Visit a Hydra facility and engaging in a training exercise.
  • Conduct crime scene searches and evidence in the Liverpool Centre for Advanced Policing Studies crime scene facilities.

Your Course Director will participate in the Summer School with you.

Accommodation will be in privately run student flats shared with other students in the summer school.  Basic items (dishes, pots, pans and linen) will be provided.  There will be a kitchen to allow you to cook your own meals if you prefer not to eat in local restaurants in Liverpool.

Student must have successfully completed four subjects and can provide a supporting email from one of their subject coordinators.

Academic Recognition

You will be required to enrol in and complete JST264 Criminal Justice with an International Context.

Students may be eligible to apply for a  Vice-Chancellor Travel Grant of $400. Students must complete all predeparture requirements (see pre-departure tab)  before payment can be made.

Pre-departure

All participants will be required to complete mandatory pre-departure requirements. This includes the provision and completion of the following

  • Flight Itinerary*:  You must submit a copy of your E-ticket that clearly lists your dates, flight number/ times from the day you leave Australia until the day you return and confirmation these flights have been paid for.
  • Travel Insurance*:  You will need to ensure you have the appropriate medical and travel insurance from the day you leave Australia until the day you return.  You must submit a copy of your certificate of insurance and your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). At a minimum your insurance must include:
    • Medical Expenses $500,000
    • Repatriation Expenses $15,000
    • Personal Liability $1,000,000
    • 24hr Emergency Assistance Included
    • COVID 19 cover
  • Passport:  You must submit a copy of your passport (the page where your photo is).
  • Pre-departure modules: You will be registered for online pre-departure training
  • Registration with World Travel Protection (WTP): The app provides immediate access to 24-hour emergency medical assistance (in the event that your own insurer is unavailable), security alerts and detailed country reports. You will need to enable World Travel Protection to access your location so you can receive real-time travel and security support if an incident occurs.
  • Student Declaration form: This will be provided with your acceptance email.
  • Emergency contact form: This will be provided with your acceptance email

In addition to the above requirements your program leader will host a number of online predeparture meetings that you will be expected to attend.

Learning about so many different cultures and meeting such a different group of people is something you can’t experience in classrooms here. Everyone was there for the same reasons; a love of learning, love of travel and curiosity. These things bound us all together.
