Would you like to spend the mid year break studying near the beach in Wilmington, USA?

The University of  North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW)  has extended an invitation to Charles Sturt University students to participate in their Summer  program.

UNCW Summer at the Beach 2025 is a 4-week study abroad opportunity for international students enrolled in degree-seeking programs at accredited international universities. Students are able to learn about U.S. culture, participate in UNCW programming, and explore the Wilmington community. Students must be approved by OISS prior to application by submitting the UNCW Summer Interest Form.

The University of North Carolina at Wilmington is one of Charles Sturt University's oldest exchange partners in the Untied States of America.  It is located just minutes from the beach and has a vibrant culture that celebrates the arts, film and music.

An example itinerary for the program is:

June 21 Arrival date and airport pick-up (Wilmington, NC airport - ILM). Start of on-campus housing.
June 23-24 International Student Orientation
June 25 Classes Begin.
July 3-6 Independence Day Holiday Break. Holiday observance; no classes.
July 17 Last day of classes & farewell event.
July 18 Final examinations.
July 21 Departure date and airport drop-off (Wilmington, NC airport - ILM). End of on-campus housing.

Academic Recognition

You may need to have unspecified elective as a part of their course to receive academic credit - ensure you discuss with your Course Director prior to applying.  Your Course Director can provide advice on academic recognition you could receive after successfully completing the Summer Program.

Please note:  The Program coincides with the commencement of Charles Sturt University's semester 2.

Funding

Students may be eligible to apply for a Vice-Chancellor Travel Grant of $400.

If you’re studying in a Commonwealth supported place and you undertake this program you may be eligible for OS-HELP.

Additional details

OPTIONAL: 1 or 3 credit class on U.S. Culture can be included for additional cost of  USD$1,000 per credit and may require a student visa.Questions?

  • 4 excursions (examples: Myrtle Beach, Boat Tour, NC Aquarium, Downtown Walking Tour)
  • 20 hours of lectures taught by UNCW faculty
  • Airport pick-up and drop-off

Pre-departure

All participants will be required to complete mandatory pre-departure requirements. This includes the provision and completion of the following

  • Flight Itinerary*:  submit a copy of your E-ticket .
  • Travel Insurance*:  ensure you have the appropriate medical and travel insurance from the day you leave Australia until the day you return.  You must submit a copy of your certificate of insurance and your Product Disclosure Statement (PDS). At a minimum your insurance must include:
    • Medical Expenses $500,000
    • Repatriation Expenses $15,000
    • Personal Liability $1,000,000
    • 24hr Emergency Assistance Included
    • COVID 19 cover
  • Passport:  submit a copy of the photo page of your passport
  • Pre-departure modules: You will be registered for online pre-departure training once we approve your application
  • Registration with World Travel Assist: The app provides immediate access to 24-hour emergency medical assistance (in the event that your own insurer is unavailable), security alerts and detailed country reports.
  • Student Declaration form: This will be provided with your acceptance email.

Learning about so many different cultures and meeting such a different group of people is something you can’t experience in classrooms here. Everyone was there for the same reasons; a love of learning, love of travel and curiosity. These things bound us all together.
