Elite Athlete and Performer program

Training, performing, or competitive sporting commitments can be challenging and may require additional flexibility.  We can support you while you balance your sporting career and study commitments.

This is a SSAF funded initiative

How we can support you

Our dedicated staff can support you while you study as part of the Elite Athlete and Performer program. Many of our members can:

  • study their course online
  • get special consideration for admission
  • apply for elite athlete and performer program scholarships
  • get flexibility in their studies, sit exams elsewhere or get assignment extensions
  • get subsidised on-campus accommodation support
  • access tailored study plans and academic support
  • use our gyms and sporting facilities
  • get free Charles Sturt Elite Athlete and Performer Program apparel
  • get Uni Nationals representation subsidies.

Charles Sturt University is a member of the Australian Institute of Sports Elite Athlete Education Network, and UniSport Australia’s Elite Student Athlete Pathway Program.

Eligibility

We have four categories in our program and a set of eligibility criteria for each sport.

Athletes participating at the highest level of their sport or activity. The University will grant Elite Athlete status to athletes who are:

  • national representatives
  • selected to participate in international sporting (or cultural) events
  • and are identified and recognised by a national supporting body or association.

Other representation will be considered on an individual basis.

Athletes that have been recognised for their potential to attain high honours in their selected sport.

Recognition accepted from a:

  • regional academy
  • state/national sporting organisation
  • or the associated pathway for the chosen sport.

Support people involved at the highest level of their sport or sports related activity.

This includes:

  • referees
  • coaches
  • officials
  • and support staff with the same travel and training commitments as Elite Athletes.
Someone who has been identified as having performed successfully in extended or significant productions/performing arts at a state, national or international level.

Para and disability athletes are categorised in the same levels for their sport as listed above, unless their performance pathway differs Elite Sports Personnel category is included in the competition level categories above (ie. You need to be officiating, coaching etc at the same level) For the Elite Performer category, you’re considered an elite performer if you are a member of, and have had significant success in, a major artistic performing arts or production company at a national or international level. More specifically the criteria can include:

  • Actors Equity Australia
  • Australia dance council
  • Australian dance theatre
  • Australian chamber orchestra
  • The symphony Australia company
  • Opera Australia/ state opera
  • Australian or State Ballet Company
  • Cheer and Dance Australia All Star Federation

The above list of sports is not exhaustive for our eligible Elite Athlete and Performer Program sports categories. However, student athletes must be competing in Sport Australia funded sports, participating professional sports or UniSport Australia sports.

In order to be eligible you must be an active student at Charles Sturt University and be currently competing at the required level as indicated in the above table

For students who are representing another country outside Australia, the sport must be reflective of the same structure as outlined above, ie. their sport must be recognised and funded by their national sports governing body

  • You can check the status of your request on your Student Portal
