Parents and carers

Balancing study with other commitments, like work and family can be tricky. We know studying as a carer or parent comes with its own challenges (and rewards!) and we'll support you wherever we can.

Support for student carers

Being related to, living with, or being in a relationship with someone in need doesn't automatically make you a carer. A student carer is someone who consistently helps and cares for another person with a disability, medical condition, mental health issue, or who is elderly and frail. This means the person receiving care largely relies on the student for their daily needs and support.

If you are a student carer, we can support you in a lot of different ways.

Support for studying parents

If you fall pregnant while studying, you may decide to adjust your study commitments or take some time off to balance study with your family’s needs. You may be able to:

  • take a leave of absence
  • decrease your study load
  • negotiate flexible study arrangements. Talk to your lecturers about any special arrangements you may need, such as breastfeeding or care requirements.

Parent rooms

Each of our campuses offers a parent room open to parents, carers and young children. These rooms offer spaces for breastfeeding, expressing milk, changing nappies and caring for your children, or a quiet study space while accompanied by young children.
