Establishing Ethical Boundaries for AI Use in Supervision of Honours and HDR Students

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) becomes increasingly prevalent in academic settings, particularly in the supervision of Honours and Higher Degree by Research(HDR) students, the absence of clear guidelines at CSU regarding its ethical use is becoming a significant concern. This issue is especially pressing in thecontext of regional and isolated students who may rely more heavily on AI as a supplementary tool for academic support due to limited access to resources.Currently, there is no consensus on what constitutes acceptable AI use, nor are there clear protocols on how AI contributions should be documented inacademic work. This roundtable seeks to address these gaps by fostering a collaborative discussion aimed at establishing ethical boundaries and practicalguidelines for AI use in academic supervision.

The primary objective of this roundtable is to develop a set of consensus-driven guidelines for the ethical use of AI in the supervision of Honours and HDRstudents. By engaging participants in a focused discussion, we aim to:
1. Identify the current challenges and ethical considerations surrounding AI use in academic settings.
2. Define acceptable practices for AI use, particularly in the context of regional and isolated students who may have distinct needs.
3. Establish clear documentation standards for AI-generated content in student work.
4. Gather feedback and insights on how AI is currently being utilized by students and supervisors.
Issues/Questions/Ideas for Exploration and Discussion:
1. Ethical Boundaries for AI Use: What constitutes ethical use of AI in academic supervision, and where should the boundaries be drawn? How can we ensurethat AI tools are used to enhance learning without compromising academic integrity?
2. Regional and Isolated Students: How can AI be ethically and effectively supported as a tool for students in regional and isolated areas? What additionalguidelines or resources might be needed to address their specific challenges?
3. Documentation Standards: How should AI usage be transparently documented in student work? What are the best practices for ensuring that AIcontributions are clearly indicated, and how can we maintain academic accountability?
4. Current Practices and Feedback: What are the current trends in AI use among students, and how are supervisors managing this? How can feedback fromthe academic community inform the development of robust guidelines?
