In order to reduce student dropout, improve the student experience and position students for academic success, the first year of study is particularly integral in reducing causes of drop out (Ortiz-Lozano, 2018). Further, the Covid-19 Pandemic and subsequent increase in utilization of online learning strategies has affected enrolments and academic performance (Cicha, 2021). This highlights the importance of retaining first year students and providing them with sufficient support to position them for academic success. The School of Allied Health, Exercise and Sports Science 1st year student experience working group was established in 2023 with the aim to enhance 1st year student orientation and support.
Presentation aim
The presentation aim is to outline the activities taken by the SAHESS 1st year experience working party.
Methods
The working party was led by the SAHESS Associate Head of School in Learning and Teaching. An expression of interest was circulated by the Head of SAHESS, and interested staff were required to provide a short response outlining why they were interested in participating in this group.
Results
The group initially comprised of about 10 members from across SAHESS, representing disciplines such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy, podiatry, exercise and sports science and interprofessional health. Undergraduate and post-graduate student feedback was sought to provide insight into the challenges faced by first year students and how their university experience could be improved. Data drawn from Student Evaluation Surveys, Grade Distribution reports and QUASAR reporting also informed decision making in relation to initiatives.
Discussion
Staff and student feedback was utilized to guide a number of initiatives undertaken by the group which in 2024 have included:
*The development of TikTok Videos in partnership with the Big Picture Project at a local High School
*Facilitation of a number of staff professional development sessions devoted to upskilling staff in their capability to provide support for diverse students
*Work with student to develop to a Podcast series ‘First Year Student Experience Pilot Program’
*Development of Instagram reels promoting good teaching practices in first year subjects to inform future subject development
Conclusion
The School of Allied Health, Exercise and Sports Science 1st year student experience working group successfully led the implementation of a number of initiatives to improve the first year student experience. The TikTok videos and Instagram reels have been viewed over 80,000 times; 50 staff attended the professional development sessions; and a student was successful in their application for SSAF Grant to support the development of the Podcast series with the support of the working party. Despite limitations in available time, staff workload and the disparity of staff and students across campuses and online, this working group has been successful in establishing meaningful strategies to enhance first year student experiences.
