Interactive components (H5P Suite)

H5P is an abbreviation for HTML5 Package, and allows academic and support staff involved in subject and course development to create a range of interactive resources/activities.

Create your interactive resources through WordPress sites for each subject and then embed your H5P content into subject site for students to use.

Why use h5P

H5P is a free, open source platform that contains a suite of tools you can use to create interactive learning objects (e.g. to be included within your own subject content). Charles Sturt has its own secure platform for creating H5P objects, which is hosted on our own servers.

Affordances and limitations

Affordances

H5P activities can be easily embedded in an interact site.

Any staff member can request a site for their subject or project at http://h5p.csu.edu.au

Works across most browsers and devices.

limitations

H5P has many assessment tools however these can only be used for formative assessment not summative as our current version does not store results.

Some content types are not accessible so additional resources may needs to be provided if these interactives are used.

The H5P site is not to be used as the method of activity delivery.

Embedding Interactive H5P Objects into Brightspace sites

There are two ways to house your H5P object in your Brightspace:

Create a new page:

  1. In the Page content editor, select the source code icon (</>) to switch to the code view
  2. Paste (ctrl + v) your H5P object embed code
  3. save and close.

You will now be able to see & use your H5P object (make sure the page is not hidden if you want students to do the same).

Edit an existing page:

  1. Open the content page in edit mode
  2. Click in the content where you want the item placed, type in ‘X’ (this will be easy to find once you start using the source code view).
  3. Select the source code icon in the toolbar (</>).
    1. Hit "control + f" (this will open the find dialogue box inside the code)
    2. Type in ‘xxxx’, highlight the four x’s (left click and drag)
    3. Paste (ctrl + v) the embed code
    4. Save and close.

You will now be able to see & use your H5P object (make sure the object is not hidden if you want students to do the same).

How to guides

Below you will find some initial guidance on how to access, and then build interactive learning objects within the H5P platform. Additional support materials will be identified, where available.

If you would like to briefly explore H5P without signing up, visit the public website.

  • Contains a suite of activity type sample ‘templates’ that you can later customise, then embed into your own content areas (e.g. learning modules, landing pages, other websites)
  • Best place to start → ‘Examples and Downloads’, click into each activity to see demonstrations of each interactive learning object in use.

Accessing H5P @ CSU (account types)

Subject / Project Development - Charles Sturt staff members are able to request a H5P site for developing their individual subject or project at http://h5p.csu.edu.au.

After completing the New H5P site request form, two things will happen:

  1. DIT will create an individual website for building H5P objects.
  2. The user who logged the request will be added as an administrator to the website and login

Individual (personal) use - Free test accounts are available via the public website at https://h5p.org.

Accessing H5P @ Charles Sturt (1st time users)

If you would like to use H5P in your subject or a project, please submit a request at https://h5p.csu.edu.au

  • Once granted an h5p.csu account, you will have access to a WordPress site (similar to Thinkspace) where you can create H5P activities for that particular subject/project.
  • Go to https://h5p.csu.edu.au/wp-login.php (also accessible via the ‘Existing Users’ link on the main h5p.csu site)
  • Login using the credentials provided in your initial email confirmation (see above)
  • Select ‘My Sites’ (top left) and select the subject.

Select the ‘H5P Content’ item from the left-hand menu

  • A list of this subject's existing H5P ‘activities’ will appear.
  • Select ‘Add new’ or edit an existing item.
  • Enter a title for the activity (this will not be displayed when you embed the activity). Scroll through the list of content types, and you may need to click ‘Get’ to install it, select the content type you wish to create and start populating the activity.
  • Once finished, scroll up and select ‘Create’ from the top right-hand corner. (note: Subsequent work on this item will change this button to ‘Update’).
  • Select your new item from the All H5P Content list - this will display a preview for you to test.
  • When complete, select the ‘Embed’ option underneath and copy the highlighted ‘Iframe’ code provided.
  • Once created, h5p activities can then be embedded in a Brightspace site.

When working in the H5P.CSU back end, be sure to use the ‘Dashboard’ and the appropriate subject folder to create learning objects – The wordpress site itself is not to be used as the method of activity delivery.
