Week 1

It's the first week of session and it's time to welcome your students.

Disclaimer: subject preparation processes within and across Faculties/Schools can vary; the below pages are to be used as a guide only. In the first instance, refer to directives from Faculty and your School especially in relation to due dates.

Task 1

Welcome message (regardless of mode)

  • Send a short, focused announcements outlining expectations
  • Providing guidelines about how students should approach the subject and expectations for the first week. Keep it short, focused and welcoming.
  • Outline expected student engagement and instructions for
    • any technologies they are required to use.
    • interaction with peers or learning activities.
  • Outline what students can expect from you in regards to communication  and expected response time.
Task 2

Meet and get to know your students

  • ‘Getting to know you’ activities
  • If students are familiar with each other, set up opportunities for them to reflect on prior knowledge, subject expectations, or explore technology in a supported way.

Outline assessment expectations

Develop a high Teacher Presence

  • Respond to emails and queries in the Discussion Forums
  • Allow time in face-to-face sessions to answer questions.
  • Conduct a Survey giving students a choice regarding their learning e.g. options for online meeting times inline with the information provided in the Subject Outline.
  • Consider encouraging the development of study groups
