Charles Sturt Medal

The Charles Sturt Medal is awarded annually to one coursework student and recognises both academic achievement and public service consistent with the University's motto 'for the public good'.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to nominate you must:

  • have graduated or be eligible to graduate from an undergraduate or postgraduate coursework course in the relevant calendar year;
  • have received or be eligible to receive an Undergraduate, Postgraduate, or Bachelor (Honours) University medal in the relevant calendar year; and
  • demonstrate a significant commitment to the public good.

Selection Criteria

Nominees are expected to have:

  • made a significant contribution to the Australian (local, regional, national) or international community;
  • been an inspirational role model for their community and the Charles Sturt University student body; and
  • demonstrated significance and excellence in their contribution.

How to nominate

Nominees must complete and submit the Nomination Form by the due date. Nominations are to be endorsed by the Executive Dean and submitted to the Academic Senate for consideration.

Supporting Documentation

Nominations should be supported by the following:

  • the nominees academic transcript;
  • evidence to support the claim(s) and the impact these had; and
  • referee statement(s) attesting to the veracity of the claim(s) made.

Support

Faculties may provide support and advice to candidates in preparing their nominations.

Nominees are encouraged to refer to and reference the Charles Sturt University Values and Graduate Learning Outcomes (particularly Indigenous Cultural Competence, Global Citizenship and Sustainable Practices) in their nomination.

Examples of the kind of contribution that could be cited in a nomination are provided below. The list is not intended to be prescriptive or exhaustive, but rather to guide the writing of a nomination.

  • personal, academic and professional achievements at the community level
  • contribution in the relevant field (how has the nominee 'given back' to their field to benefit others?)
  • demonstrated leadership, innovation and creativity
  • personal interests and community involvement
  • contribution to development of local, regional, national or international community and/or economy
  • degree of difficulty of the achievement and sacrifices made
  • voluntary work beyond paid employment and the nature and length of activity or service of voluntary work
  • achievements as an individual or as part of a group or organisation, and if the latter describe the individual contribution
  • any documentary evidence that supports statements of involvement and contribution
  • reflections on activities and behaviours that demonstrate motivation, learning (insights, attitudes and values) and other outcomes.

Timeline

Nominations open 20 November 2024 The Executive Dean of each faculty will invite eligible candidates to nominate (refer to the Nomination Process below). Candidates are encouraged to make contact with the faculty prior to nominations opening if they wish.
Nominations close 29 January 2025 Candidates submit their nomination form and support documentation to the Executive Dean.
Nominations reviewed 30 January - 13 February 2025 The Executive Dean (or delegates) will review nominations and submit all eligible nominations to the Academic Senate.
Nominations submitted11 February 2025Nominations must be endorsed by the Executive Dean of the Faculty and submitted to the Academic Senate (via governance@csu.edu.au)
Medal recipient selected February 2025 The Academic Senate will assess the nominations based on the selection criteria and nominees statement and award one Charles Sturt Medal. The Academic Senate is not required to award a Charles Sturt Medal if there are no suitable nominees.
Medals conferred April / May 2025 (Regional ceremonies)
September 2025 (Sydney Metro ceremonies)
Medal recipients are given the option to receive their medal at the April/May (regional) or September (Sydney Metro) graduation ceremony, or posted to them. A recipient will be required to return their original transcript so that an updated transcript can be provided.
