Higher Degree by Research University Medal

Higher Degree by Research University Medals are awarded annually to one masters by research graduand/graduate and one doctoral graduand/graduate, per faculty.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible to be nominated you must have qualified for a masters by research or doctorate award within the calendar year for which the medals are to be awarded and:

For doctoral candidates

  • have completed within four years (full time equivalent) from the commencement of candidature or extension of this timeframe due to exceptional circumstances; and
  • have achieved as examiner recommendations, a minimum of two passes plus a third outcome that is determined as indicating outstanding quality from examiner’s evidence, as determined by the Sub-Dean, Graduate Studies and/or Dean of Graduate Studies.

For masters by research candidates

  • have completed within two years (full time equivalent) from the commencement of candidature or extension of this timeframe due to exceptional circumstances; and
  • have achieved as examiner recommendations, a minimum of one pass plus a second outcome that is determined as indicating outstanding quality from examiner’s evidence, as determined by the Sub-Dean, Graduate Studies and/or Dean of Graduate Studies.

Assessment Criteria

The following Assessment Criteria must be addressed as part of the nomination:

  • details of academic prizes and/or scholarships won by the nominee whilst completing their Higher Degree by Research studies;
  • details of research outputs from the doctoral or master by research which, may include but not limited to, refereed publications, conference proceedings, journal articles, patents, exhibitions and other creative works; and
  • the impact of the research both in terms of actual and potential outcomes for industry, government, professional organisations, business and community.

How to nominate

The Sub-Dean (Graduate Studies) of each faculty must ensure the Nomination Form is completed and submitted, along with the Examiners' reports for each nominee, to the Office of Governance and Corporate Administration (via governance@csu.edu.au), for consideration by the University Research Committee by the due date.

Nov - Dec 2024Consideration of SubmissionsThe Sub-Dean (Graduate Studies) of each Faculty will identify anyone who meets the eligibility criteria, review the list and submit their nominations to the Office of Governance and Corporate Administration. Nominees will give their consent on the nomination form.
23 January 2025 Nominations closeDeadline for the Sub Dean (Graduate Studies) to submit nominations to the Office of Governance and Corporate Administration.
January - February 2025 Nominations reviewed The University Research Committee will review the nominations and recommend one master's graduand/graduate, and one doctoral graduand/graduate per faculty, for consideration by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research).
14 February 2025 Medal Recipients Identified The Office of Governance and Corporate Administration advises the Division of Students - Student Administration, Academic Senate, and the successful medal recipients of the results.
April 2025 Medals Conferred Medal recipients are given the option to receive their medal at an April graduation ceremony, or posted to them. A recipient will be required to return their original transcript so that an updated transcript can be provided.
