Equally Well

Why help?

Mental health and wellbeing is a basic human right often denied to many in our community. The vision of Equally Well is to improve the physical health of people living with mental illness by providing equal access to quality health care.

Currently, four out of five people living with a mental illness have a co-existing physical illness (illness unrelated to their mental health). People living with a mental illness are six times more likely to die from cardiovascular disease and four times more likely to die from respiratory disease. People living with a mental illness are likely to die between 14 and 23 years earlier than the general population.  Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are estimated to have ten years lower life expectancy than other Australians, with an even greater gap for those with mental illness.
