Doctors for the future
You can help impact the future of health in the rural and regional communities of Australia
"Thank you, doctor." Those three words are being spoken right now, right across Australia. They tell a story of expert medical care, reassurance and support. Regional Australia needs more doctors to hear them and help address the healthcare crisis in the bush.
That’s why Charles Sturt University and Western Sydney University have partnered to create a new Joint Program in Medicine. It’s a five-year undergraduate entry Doctor of Medicine based in Orange, New South Wales, starting in 2021.
This comes at a time, which finds many rural areas without permanent doctors, an unacceptable state and an issue that requires urgent attention.
The course will aim to train students from these regions in best practice medicine specifically for operation in isolated circumstances. Pairing them in placement opportunities in rurally isolated regions will assist in building meaningful long-term relationships with rural communities.
Our new medical students will face many challenges whilst completing the course. There are many costs from textbooks to living away from home for extended periods. No student should be left behind because they did not have the financial backing.
In establishing the Doctors for the future fund, it is our vision to ensure that students have access to financial support through scholarships to steward them through the course. In addition, we aim to maintain equitable access to learning resources equal to their metropolitan counterparts.
When we think about sub-standard access to healthcare, our gaze is often lifted beyond Australia’s borders to war zones and developing nations. However, there are many in our country that have inequitable access to adequate healthcare resources. These communities face a future of uncertainty on their longevity and quality of life.
Your generosity will alter this future and impact the lives of rural communities by giving to the Doctors for the Future fund today. All donations over $2 are tax deductible and 100% of your donation will be used to help students.
