PhD in Legal Informatics from the University of Bologna (CIRFID, now ALMA AI)
I received my PhD in Legal Informatics from the University of Bologna (CIRFID, now ALMA AI) in 1997. Since then, I have held academic and research positions in universities and research centres in Australia and around the world.
My research focuses on logic, formal methods, and artificial intelligence and how to apply them in other disciplines. In particular, for the formalisation of legal and normative reasoning, business process management, and business process compliance. I have developed conceptually sound and computationally feasible models of legal reasoning, and I have applied them in the business process management area, starting the novel business process compliance field. In 2017, our 2007 paper, where we introduced the idea of business process compliance, received the BPM Conference Test of Time Award for the most influential paper from the conference. In 2015, I received the Australian Computer Society Gold Award for Computer Scientist of the Year for my research in computational law.
In th recent years, I continued my research in Legal informatics, with a focus on further validation of the models I have created and investigating how to apply them for the development of responsible AI systems.
I joined AICF in February 2024 to contribute to its research stream in Responsible AI.
