Selecting a region of interest

The region of interest selected will largely depend on the extent of the surveillance area where the target species are to be found and the management objectives of the area.

In a region such as Kosciuszko National Park, regions surveyed are typically many thousands of square kilometres, whilst detections implemented on a farm or along a roadside may only comprise very small regions (as low as several square metres). It is first important to consider which aerial platform will be most appropriate to mount the required sensor. Although this will be discussed further, for larger areas, it is likely that aircraft or satellite platforms will be most suitable.

If UAVs are to be used for larger areas, it is important to consider the significant battery availability that will be required to fly these distances, as well as the resolution of the imagery required and the relative ability to access a suitable area for take-off. Larger areas may need to be broken down into smaller individual target parcels within the region of interest. Smaller regions can be flown in a very short time frame with UAVs when optimal weather conditions are operating.
