Who needs to apply

You will need approval from the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC):

  1. To purchase/acquire micro-organisms of Risk Group 2 or higher (agents that are associated with human disease which is rarely serious and for which preventative or therapeutic interventions are often available), or.
  2. To work with genetically modified organisms (GMOs) or potentially infectious and/or hazardous agents at Charles Sturt University

All staff and students who will be conducting research or practical teaching that involves genetically modified organisms or potentially infectious and/or hazardous agents (including human blood and tissues), or who will be importing biological material, may be required to apply to Charles Sturt University's Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) for approval.

Dealings with, in relation to a GMO, means:

  • human or animal blood and tissues
  • conducting experiments with the GMO
  • making, developing, producing or manufacturing the GMO
  • breeding the GMO
  • propagating the GMO
  • using the GMO in the course of manufacture of an entity that is not the GMO
  • growing, raising or culturing the GMO
  • importing, transporting or disposing of a GMO.
