Human research undertaken at Charles Sturt University, whether it be interviewing rural small business holders, testing psychological theory with an online questionnaire, observing classroom behaviour, measuring muscle responses to fitness training, product testing in a shopping mall must be reviewed by the Human Research Ethics Committee and approval gained before commencing. Ethics review is guided by the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research (The National Statement).

The National Statement is constructed on the premise that ethical conduct “is more than simply doing the right thing. It involves acting in the right spirit, out of an abiding respect and concern for one’s fellow creatures”.  The National Statement is not a list of rules, rather it provides guidance on ways to consider ethical issues related to human research.
