Introductory Chemistry 1 - SSS036

Be introduced to some essential understanding in Chemistry!

If you didn’t study chemistry at school or would like a refresher, this is a great place to start! You will be introduced to a basic model of atomic structure and apply that model to the first 20 elements to explain their properties and bonding. You will also become familiar with naming conventions, the writing of formulas and a table of ions as well as the naming of organic compounds and the creation of polymers

In this short preparatory subject, we’ll cover these aspects of Chemistry:

  • Matter
    • Classification of matter
  • The atom
    • Atomic structure
    • The formation of compounds – bonding
  • Properties and naming conventions
    • The properties of ionic and molecular compounds
    • The naming of chemical compounds
  • Organic Chemistry
    • Appreciating the diversity and complexity of Organic Chemistry – hydrocarbons and polymers
